Go to a hospital, not a dentist, if
- Swelling is spreading to your eye, neck or under your jaw
- You are finding it hard to breathe or swallow
- You have had a blow to the head, or your jaw may be broken
- Bleeding does not slow after 20 minutes of firm pressure
What to do in the next few minutes
A knocked-out adult tooth
Time matters most here. Hold it by the crown, never the root. Rinse briefly if it is dirty, without scrubbing. If you can, slide it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in cold milk and come quickly. Do not put a knocked-out milk tooth back in. Call us instead.
A broken or chipped tooth
Save any pieces, rinse with water and use a cold pack on the cheek. A sharp edge can be covered with sugar-free gum until you are seen.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm salt water and floss around the tooth in case food is trapped. Take the painkiller you normally use, as directed on the pack. Never place a tablet against the gum, since it burns the tissue.
Swelling on the gum or face
A swelling usually means infection. Use a cold pack on the outside, and avoid heat. Do not try to burst a gum boil. It needs a dentist's attention soon, even if the pain eases, because that can simply mean the nerve has died.
A lost crown or filling
Keep the crown safe and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side, and do not use household glue.
What we do when you arrive
The first aim is to stop the pain and find out what is causing it. Where a tooth is keeping you awake, relief comes first, with same-day care where possible, and the longer-term plan follows. That might be a root canal, a crown or an extraction. You will be told what is urgent and what can wait.
When the clinic is open
Sessions run from 11am to 2pm and from 4:30pm to 7:30pm, and we are closed on Wednesday. Outside those times, send a WhatsApp message with a photo and a short description so that we see it as soon as we are back. If you have any of the warning signs at the top of this page, do not wait for us.

Frequently asked questions
Are you open 24 hours?
No. The clinic keeps set hours, so please call before you travel. If you have spreading swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department.
Can I be seen the same day?
Call as early as you can. Urgent pain is prioritised wherever the day's list allows, and the team will tell you the earliest time available.
Will the tooth have to come out?
Often it can be saved. Keeping your own tooth is almost always the better outcome, and an extraction is advised only when it cannot be kept.
My child has knocked a tooth. What should I do?
Find the tooth and call us. Do not put a milk tooth back in. An adult tooth should go back or into cold milk as quickly as possible.
