Root canal treatment
A root canal saves a tooth whose nerve is infected or dying. It is the treatment people arrive most afraid of, and the one Dr Malik's reviews mention most often, usually to say it did not hurt. Conscious sedation is available if the thought of it is the problem.
- ✓Single-rooted root canal for front teeth and premolars
- ✓Molar root canal, the multi-rooted back teeth
- ✓Re-treatment of a root canal done elsewhere that has failed
- ✓Post and core to rebuild a badly broken tooth before its crown
- ✓Apicoectomy when infection persists at the root tip
- ✓Same-day relief for a tooth that is keeping you awake
A root-canalled tooth almost always needs a crown afterwards to stop it fracturing. Both are planned together at the consultation so there are no surprises later.

Dental implants
An implant replaces a missing tooth from the root up: a titanium fixture placed in the bone, then a crown on top that looks and chews like your own tooth. Unlike a bridge, it does not need the teeth on either side to be cut down.
- ✓Osstem and Dentium implant systems
- ✓Implant crown fitted once the fixture has integrated with the bone
- ✓Bone graft where the jaw needs building up first
- ✓Replacement of a single tooth or several
- ✓Planning from an X-ray before anything is committed to
- ✓An honest answer on whether an implant is right for you at all
An implant takes months, not one visit. The fixture has to knit into the bone before the crown goes on, and rushing that is what makes implants fail.

Crowns and veneers
A crown covers and protects a tooth that is weak, broken or root-canalled. A veneer is a thin facing on the front of a tooth that changes its shape or colour. They solve different problems and the doctor will tell you which one yours needs.
- ✓Metal and PFM crowns, dependable for back teeth
- ✓Zirconia and E-max all-ceramic crowns, metal-free with no grey line at the gum
- ✓Temporary crowns while the final one is being made
- ✓Composite veneers, built up in a single visit
- ✓Porcelain veneers, lab-made and longer lasting
- ✓Inlays and onlays for cavities too large for a filling
Metal-free crowns matter most on teeth that show. On a back molar, a PFM crown does the same job for less.

Smile design
Smile design plans the teeth you show when you smile as one set rather than fixing them one at a time. Shape, length, colour and how they sit against your lip are decided together, before any work starts.
- ✓Planned across the six upper front teeth as standard
- ✓A combination of veneers, crowns and reshaping, whichever each tooth needs
- ✓Gap closure between the front teeth
- ✓Whitening first where the natural shade can be improved without covering the tooth
- ✓The plan shown to you before anything is prepared
- ✓Nothing irreversible until you have agreed the result you want
The cheapest smile design is often the one that does the least. If whitening and a single veneer would get you there, that is what you should be offered.

Braces and aligners
Both straighten teeth over roughly a year to two years. Braces are fixed on and do the work for you. Aligners are clear removable trays that almost nobody notices, but they only work if you actually wear them.
- ✓Self-ligating metal braces, fewer adjustment visits than conventional ones
- ✓Self-ligating ceramic braces, tooth-coloured and far less visible
- ✓Invisalign clear aligners
- ✓Retainers at the end of treatment, which are not optional
- ✓Adjustment visits in the evening session for people who work
- ✓An honest view on which of the two suits your case and your habits
Aligners need 20 to 22 hours of wear a day. If that is not realistic for you, the doctor will say so and recommend braces instead.

Kids' dentistry
Milk teeth matter. They hold the space for the adult teeth behind them, and an infection in one hurts a child just as much as it would hurt you. Children are treated with the extra patience a first visit needs, and conscious sedation is available for those who cannot manage otherwise.
- ✓Fillings and extractions for children
- ✓Pulpotomy and pulpectomy, the milk-tooth versions of a root canal
- ✓Stainless steel crowns for badly decayed milk teeth
- ✓Space maintainers when a milk tooth is lost too early
- ✓Habit-breaking appliances for thumb sucking and tongue thrusting
- ✓Pit and fissure sealants to stop cavities before they start
Bring your child for a first look while nothing hurts. A visit where nothing is done is the best way to make the second one easy.

Cleaning, fillings and whitening
The everyday work that stops the expensive work being needed. A cleaning twice a year, small cavities filled while they are still small, and whitening when you want it.
- ✓Scaling and polishing
- ✓Deep cleaning for gums that bleed or have started to pull back
- ✓Tooth-coloured composite and GIC fillings
- ✓Fluoride application and pit and fissure sealants
- ✓Teeth whitening
- ✓Night guards for grinding, and mouth guards for sport
Bleeding when you brush is not normal and it is not something to wait out. It is the earliest sign of gum disease and the easiest stage to treat.
